There is a new movement afoot called the Choice for Men
movement. Those who lobby for C4M argue that men shouldn't be
forced to pay child support for children they don't want.
They argue that men should be allowed to give up their parental
rights within the first month of pregnancy and would only be
forced by law to financially support the child and mother during
pregnancy, but not after birth. The argument is that women have
more choices available to them than men do: pregnant women may
choose the morning-after pill, abortion or adoption whereas
impregnating men do not have those options. C4M argues that
vasectomies and condoms are not as effective as the birth
control methods available to women. They also argue that, in
some cases, women have lied about being on birth control.
Paternity laws should be amended. As it stands, even male
victims of statutory rape can be legally forced to pay child
support. A woman who steals sperm out of a condom to impregnate
herself should not expect the man to support her child, but
currently the law is in her favor. We should change these laws,
but not by giving the average Joe a loophole out of sexual
responsibility.
C4M does have legitimate concerns, but these issues go to
support the creation of effective male birth control, not new
laws to help men evade responsibility. Men who want more
reproductive freedoms ought to look towards medicine, not law.
The male reproductive system is much simpler than the female.
Men should demand more than condoms. They need the availability
of a pill, injection or surgical implant, just like women have.
Consumer demand could easily speed up the creation of better
birth control for men.
We all know that heterosexual sex can result in pregnancy.
Having sex means taking that risk. C4M simply wants sex sans
risk – for men. But already sex involves fewer risks for men
than for women. The movement's desire for sexual equality
ignores the inequalities that favor men.
The fact is that heterosexual sex is far more risky for women
than it is for men no matter how many choices women have. Women
are more often injured during intercourse than men. Women are
far more likely to contract diseases through sex with men due to
the female anatomy being internal versus the man's external
anatomy. Women who get pregnant must take the risk of childbirth
or abortion, both of which can be life threatening. And given
the fact that women generally earn less than men, especially
mothers, the financial burden of children is often greater on
women than on men. Expecting fathers to partially support their
children helps balance the scales a bit. Men who decide to have
sex with women must accept this one, minor responsibility,
considering that women must accept most of the other
responsibilities.
In our society women bear the brunt of sexual responsibility.
C4M wants to keep it that way. |
